  1. I don’t think they give an exact age, but she is wearing a different uniform in the quick scene of her standing by her mother’s bedside in the hospital. So probably elementary school age (anywhere from 6-12 if I remember correctly)

      1. Hmm. I have the anime “mook”, and managed to hunt down the pages with Nao’s (quick) bio as I was typing. Might you, however, find someone to translate those few pages? I’ll host them for as long as you need to, that’s no problem. My scant abilities do not, unfortunately, stretch to knowledge of written Japanese (and stock spoken phrases…the humiliation). I’ll see if I can dig up the rest later. If you need anything on the rest of the characters just drop me a line as well, and I’ll see what I can do.

[ETA: I’m having so many problems with my college servers right now the links will have to wait till later…I tried them out, and all the pics show up as broken links. I hope you can use the rest of my comment in the meanwhile. Will try to reupload them in the morning when hopefully traffic isn’t so heavy.]

With regards to the links, feel to rape/abuse your faithful servant’s meagre provisions – as the saying goes, anything for more fic.

I also happened to come across a short Nao-centric video on YouTube…lemme just hunt it down again…found it.

First off, I thought it was a good video -I’m a Nao fan- but more importantly it has that (very) short scene where Nao was standing beside her mother’s bed. You can see her uniform, and a brief close-up of her face. The thing is the uniform doesn’t look Fuuka-ish at all, which led me to suspect (for a plot point for a fic I’ll never write) she, like Mai, is a transfer student, albeit one who arrived much earlier because, again, of suspicious “circumstances”. (e.g. the many tragic pasts facilitating the gradual ‘funnelling’ of the HiMEs into one particular place, and more importantly…how? Natsuki’s was only the most transparent…ergh, I’m blabbing now, aren’t I? >.< )

As to uniforms, the non-Fuuka-ness is simple – this page was very helpful, though I wish I understood French. It’s easily the most comprehensive site available for both series, and if you’ve already come across it I apologise for the redundancy. I figured out that this page was equally interesting – a detailed look at Fuuka grounds, and you might like to take a look if you don’t have the time to go through the whole site.

As a final aside, I friended your journal for precisely the reasons you stated in your initial post – the possible subject matter, if at all you ever get around to writing it. *laugh* It’s taken me long enough though: I’ve been silently savouring “Syncope” since its unveiling on shoujoai.com, and simply never found anything I particularly wanted to comment on before – often I was out of my depth and allowed my betters to answer, and also because I’d rather save my comments for when they actually sound like something less than sheer giddy fangirlism and more like something the average human being would utter.

Oh, who am I kidding? I love “Syncope”, and I don’t comment because it’s that rare type of fic that I just don’t comment on: the perfect kind. The depth of your research is fascinating, because as much as language is who we appear on the internet, so does the effort we put (or don’t, as the case may be) into what others deem ‘mere whimsy’ betray salient character points into our behaviour. There isn’t anything I want to point out. There isn’t anything I want to gush over. It is well-woven, a coherent, driven whole that cannot be dissected and analysed beneath the cold connoisseur’s eye, which is usually what I tend to do. But it’s late; I’m tired, and not very together right now. I promise I will return with signs of life and possibly intelligence (gasp!) on the morrow.

As it is it took me long enough to get here (7 chapters in to get around to adding you) and it’ll probably be another several chapters before I dust my lazy ass off enough to actually review the story itself.

        1. I’m unfamiliar with what a “mook” is, but any information that is/can be canon is wonderful. :)

Also, if you’re having problems finding a place to host images, Photobucket is free; that’s where I posted those art book pages about Natsuki’s past since I can’t use LJ’s gallery feature. (And if you weren’t aware, has been translating those official art book pages of “Natsuki’s Prelude,” and perhaps we could physically force apollyon-0 to summarize Nao’s information… fufufufu Hi, apollyon-0, if you’re reading! ^_^;)

With regards to the links, feel to rape/abuse your faithful servant’s meagre provisions – as the saying goes, anything for more fic.

          That…… was frightening. :P

The French site is very nice indeed, but alas… so French. :P Still, I’ve bookmarked it for the nice images and organization; machine translation on French tends to be better than Japanese, certainly.

I’m currently assuming that Nao was around 10. Why? Because… of the Tanner stages of puberty (with the help of the visual you provided)! Of course, anime often don’t follow that, do they? Tsk tsk.

the possible subject matter, if at all you ever get around to writing it.

We shall see indeed. :D (It also occurred to me that what I might consider smut or something may be quite harmless according to others. Or vice versa. Who knows… I’m new enough at this that I wouldn’t even attempt that material until much, much later, if at all. Ah, I’m so bad, baiting like that…)

I don’t comment because it’s that rare type of fic that I just don’t comment on: the perfect kind.

          Aww. [blush] ^^;; Certainly not.

It is well-woven, a coherent, driven whole that cannot be dissected and analysed beneath the cold connoisseur’s eye, which is usually what I tend to do.

But somehow, this makes me sad. ^^; I like real critiques. :P
For instance, made a good comment about the awkwardness of 1.7 Mai/Nao dialogue, but it’s not something I can fix easily. Hmmm.

I appreciate your help and comments. ^_^
I’m actually considering posting a full-on survey with structured questions for people to fill out by the end of Part 1 to “facilitate” critiquing. (We all like filling out surveys and polls, don’t we? Heh.)

  2. Right now I DO have an imagehost – it’s free and offers much larger filesizes. It’s just that the upload bandwidth of the college servers is practically nil. (It might as well not exist. Gah!)

And I take back anything that makes thee sad, highness. *grin* It’s just that I don’t often take apart good fics. I’m from the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” school of thinking. But I will, at some point, go through Syncope from beginning to end again. When I do, then I’ll most likely make the time to apply a fine-tooth comb to it. I’m just awful busy these few months, and reading fanfic as it is is an addictive and guilty pleasure. Gack! So yes, making the extra time to review a good fic and not just bash a bad one is just a little out of my reach right now but never fear; I will get round to it…eventually. ^^

My links aren’t really working for me, but I’m just gonna post ’em up here, keep my fingers crossed and hope they do for you. >.<

      1. They’re in this order:
        pg 36, 37, 39

        38

        *hits self upside head*

…when’ll we see another update on Syncope? *puppy dog eyes*

And if you’d like (and don’t have the above pages) I can upload the anime book (“mook” was japanese, apparently, for book) for you. It was split into three parts by the person who so kindly scanned it in.

        1. It’s just that the upload bandwidth of the college servers is practically nil.

OH, I think I misunderstood. ^_^; Sorry. Pretty useless to have nice server space when you can’t really access it, huh?

Well, it’s perfectly understandable to be busy, most being students and all. :P I guess it’s just a guilty pleasure for everyone, which is fine by me (certainly, WRITING it is a guilty pleasure for me!).

          I can see the beautiful thumbnails (Ze Google tells me a mook is “magazine + book,” meaning a Japanese book in magazine format, soft covers and all), but the links seem to have joined a rebellion to throw people at the mothership. (Hee!) Maybe permissions? (I have to assume you did manage to get around the bad bandwidth if the image hoster was able to create thumbnails…) If uploading the mook itself is easier somehow, I’d appreciate that, too. :) Whichever is easiest, really. I don’t know how one can really get arround crappy upload speeds. ^_^;

Thanks a lot for your help!
